Flees from police, crashes

A Lower Mainland man is facing a handful of charges after fleeing a traffic stop in Keremeos and crashing into a nearby RV Park.

Gary Richard, a 36-year-old man from Abbotsford, allegedly provided a fake name during a traffic stop and fled while police were running his information, according to Cpl. Brian Evans.

The incident occurred on Feb. 9 at about 7:45 p.m., at a traffic stop set up at 7th Avenue and 7 Street.

Evans said Richard took off at a dangerous, high rate of speed through town heading west.

Police received a call shortly after from the Riverside RV Park Resort, about five kilometres away, saying a vehicle had smashed through their security gate.

Upon arrival, police found Richard still in his vehicle on the scene and took him into custody.

"I think he was just trying to hide (from us) and made some very poor choices," Evans said, noting Richard wasn't impaired but did have a driving prohibition.

Richard is now facing several charges including mischief, dangerous driving and flight from police, among others.

He appeared in Penticton court on Tuesday and will be remanded in custody until his next scheduled appearance on Feb. 21.
