Parking woes at college

Madison Erhardt

Students are growing fed up with the daily struggle to find parking at Okanagan College's Kelowna campus.

Many say they are left circling the block for 20 minutes, and often end up late to class because of it.

"I have to arrive extra early to find parking, and if I can't find a spot, then I have to take the risk of getting a ticket," student Emma Carls told Castanet.

Sarah Manchester has been attending Okanagan Colllege for a little over a year and says parking has been an issue since her first day.

"If you get here before 8 a.m., you will probably find a close parking spot. If you get here after that, you can drive around and try and find a spot, but I get too impatient and I always end up parking at the overflow down Gordon," she said.

Regional dean Phill Ashman says quite a few students have come forward about the issue.

"We have done a number of things to address that," he said. "Part of it is opening 200-plus spots at the Evangel Church. We are also going to classes and letting them know that this parking is available for them."

Carls said she is aware of the extra parking at the church, but doesn't like how far students are forced to walk to get to the campus.

"I think it's kind of ridiculous to walk almost two to three blocks to the school from there," she said.

"The campus needs to invest in something a lot closer and try to expand on parking for the amount of students that come in," she added.
