Slain teen mourned

A Coquitlam high school is mourning the loss of one of its students following the death of 15-year-old Alfred Wong.

Wong, an innocent bystander, was riding in the back of his parents' car when he was hit by a bullet on Broadway in Vancouver, Saturday night.

Wong attended Pinetree Secondary School and was part of a youth group at the Coquitlam Christ Church of China. He was also a member of the New Westminster Hyack Swim Club, and coach Frici Laszlo said club members were shocked at the senseless death.

"Some of them cried. Some of them were speechless. Some of them asked for a little break," Laszlo told CTV.

Police say Kevin Whiteside, 23, also died in the gunfight. Whiteside was known to police and is believed to have taken part in the shootout.

A third person, a 30-year-old bystander from Vancouver, suffered minor injuries in the incident.

Police are still searching for a suspect and are appealing for anyone with surveillance video of the area to come forward.

"Every time criminals decide to exchange gunfire on our streets, they endanger the lives of everybody around them. The events of Saturday night were reckless, were reprehensible, and there's no justification for this type of senseless violence in this city," Chief Const. Adam Palmer said.
