Knocked out from fall on ice

A construction worker in Penticton was transported to hospital after slipping on compact snow and ice on Friday afternoon.

Fire and ambulance crews responded to the site adjacent to Veterans Way just before 4 p.m.

Coworkers at the site said the man was unconscious for close to 10 minutes after hitting his head when he slipped.

The 51-year-old male was put on a stretcher before being lifted into an ambulance.

Some workers were critical of a lack of snow clearing efforts on the back street, with one saying conditions there are "as bad as they've been" all season.

Emergency crews also attended to a man who slipped on ice and lost consciousness in downtown Penticton Thursday morning.

Cpt. Rae Simpson with the Penticton Fire Department couldn't comment on the number of calls the department has responded to for slipping on snow in recent days, as he had been off work the past four days.

"But I know (the ambulance crews) here just came from a call for someone who slipped by Walmart."

Simpson advised people to be aware that some sidewalks and side streets remain very slippery around town.
