YLW soars to new high

Kelowna International Airport saw almost 1.9 million travellers through the doors in 2017.

Official figures released by YLW Friday show 1,893,470 passengers passed through the airport last year.

That's an increase of 161,000 passengers, or 9.3 per cent, over 2016.

The largest year-over-year increase came in April, when 22.16 per cent more travellers flew in, or out, of the airport.

August was the busiest month (179,153), followed by December (177,131) and March (173,504).

More than 150,000 passengers used YLW during seven of the 12 months in 2017, compared with four in 2016.

Each month saw an increase in traffic over the same year in 2016.

“These numbers certainly exceed our projections,” said airport director Sam Samaddar.

“It’s great news. The increase in travellers translates directly to a boost to the regional economy, with an increase in tourism and support for local businesses.”

Samaddar said 2017 saw remarkable growth in capacity with an increase in route frequency and the addition of a new airline.

“We’ve also been working hard with our tourism partners across the globe to promote YLW as a four-season destination.”
