Serial thieves in court

A pair of serial thieves appeared in Kelowna court Thursday, facing mail theft charges in West Kelowna, Peachland and Summerland.

Julian Hoekstra, 43, and Kristina Anderson, 38, were arrested in a stolen RV in Peachland in December.

The pair have been charged in connection to mail stolen from Canada Post mailboxes. Police found stolen property, mail and fraudulent documents inside the RV.

Residents in both West Kelowna and Peachland spoke to Castanet in December about their ransacked mailboxes.

The pair have made thefts all across B.C. and had outstanding arrest warrants.

Hoekstra was fined $500 in 2000 for possession of a controlled substance, in Langley. In 2009, he was given a 12-month jail sentence for unauthorized use of credit card data and drug possession, in Surrey.

Hoekstra was sentenced to 19 months in prison and was forced to pay restitution of $90,000 in 2011 for a break and enter. And in 2015, he served 90 days for identity theft in Kamloops, Port Moody and Surrey.

Anderson committed fraud in Burnaby and was sentenced to 60 days in 2012. That year, she was also found guilty of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, possession or use of a stolen credit card and possession of stolen property under $5,000, in Surrey.

Anderson committed impersonation with intent to obtain property in Kamloops in 2014 and was sentenced to 30 days and ordered to pay $100 to the victim.

On Thursday, the two appeared separately by video at the Kelowna Law Courts.

Anderson and Hoekstra are facing charges of theft from mail and theft under $5,000 from a June 4 incident in Summerland. They are also charged with crimes on Dec. 12 in West Kelowna and Dec. 16 in Peachland that include theft from mail and breach of probation.

A trial has been set for April 12. Anderson waived her right for bail.

The two are expected to appear in Kelowna Law Courts on Feb. 1.
