Lots of vehicles left the roads in the Interior Wednesday as snow fell through the day.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for the Central and North Okanagan, with 10 to 15 centimetres expected to fall in the next 24 hours.

“A strong and organized frontal system will be coming onshore overnight tonight bringing periods of light snow to the central and northern Okanagan regions as well as the Shuswap,” the warning states.

The heaviest snowfall is expected Thursday afternoon, easing off into the evening.

“Be prepared to adjust your driving with changing road conditions. Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow.”

While snow created dangerous conditions on the mountain passes Wednesday, similar conditions are expected through Thursday.

A special weather statement is in effect for the entire Okanagan, with two to four centimetres of snow expected through the night followed by five to 10 cm more Thursday.

The Coquihalla Highway is also under a special weather statement, with five to 10 cm expected overnight and an additional 10 to 15 cm Thursday.

Similar conditions are expected on Highway 3, between Hope and Princeton.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for the the Fraser Valley, with 10 to 20 cm of snow expected overnight followed by periods of freezing rain Thursday.

“A significant layer of ice is possible through Friday especially over Central and Eastern Fraser Valley,” the warning states.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break.

Snowy, cold conditions contributed to several vehicle crashes across the Interior Wednesday, leading to an RCMP driver advisory.
