Sharing the 'pot'

News that the federal government would be sharing the cash pot from cannabis sales, once the drug is legalized, made for a little joy at Vernon city council Monday.

The federal government has agreed to give the provinces and territories a 75 per cent share of tax revenues from the sale of legalized marijuana.

Coun. Bob Spiers said municipalities should get a cut of that from the province.

“We should be able to stand in line and get our fair share,” Spiers told council.

Spiers said the money may be divvied up on a per capita basis but that remained to be seen. And, he expected the city to have increased costs associated not only with pot-based businesses but residential growers.
