Kelowna needs a new boss

Ron Mattiussi has put his employer on notice.

You may want to begin looking for a new manager.

Mattiussi, Kelowna's long-time city manager, has let it be known he will be stepping down from his lofty perch in 2018.

His first public hint that his days with the city were numbered came during budget deliberation day a year ago.

During his budget preamble that day, Mattiussi fought back tears when he told council this could very well be the final budget he presided over.

He was off by a year.

Speaking with Okanagan Oldies 103.9 morning show host Gord Vizzutti, Mattiussi said there is nothing official, "but I'm going to retire in the next year.

Mattiussi has been Kelowna's city manager for 13 years. Prior to that, he was planning director, a position he took March 1, 1995.

When asked what he is most proud of over the past 13 years, Mattiussi talked about the plans put in place that allowed the city to figure out what was needed and when.

"We've had phenomenal growth. If we weren't the fastest growing, we were the third fastest. We played a lot of catch up, but I think we put in place a lot of good plans to get ahead of it," said Mattiussi.

Surprises?

Mattiussi pointed to two things, including Bernard Avenue.

"I was surprised at how successful at how Bernard Avenue is. We can only do so much with bricks and mortar, the business community has to step up.

"When you walk down Bernard Avenue on a Wednesday night in November, there are people there. It's vibrant.  Everything came together."

The profound impact UBC Okanagan has had on the community, and how quickly that impact happened, also surprised Mattiussi.

As for the future, he said it's bright.

"I like the way we're going," he said.

When he first came to Kelowna, Mattiussi said the housing stock was 75 per cent single family and 25 per cent multi. That has been completely reversed through good planning and a changing demographic.

"The younger people want a condo in a vibrant, urban centre.

"That's where the downtown works. We are absolutely on the right track."
