Huge increase in break-ins

Break-ins have gone through the roof in West Kelowna.

RCMP figures show business break-ins from July through September jumped 313 per cent over the same period in 2016, and 120 per cent from the previous three months.

Residential break-ins have increased 245 per cent over the same period from 2016, and 41 per cent from the previous three months.

The report will be presented to council Tuesday evening.

Year over year, vehicle theft jumped 200 per cent, while thefts from vehicles remained steady.

Violent crime, including assault with a weapon or assault causing bodily harm, jumped from two to 13. Domestic violence calls also increased from 67 to 81.

Overall calls for service were up 13 per cent, with 2,396 calls from July through September, compared to 2,128 the previous year. Calls for service in Peachland increased 24 per cent, while calls on Westbank First Nation lands jumped 13 per cent.

"During this three months, the targeting of prolific offenders remained consistent. Crime reduction strategies are actively engaged," said Insp. Anna Marie Mallard in her presentation for council.

"Our efforts of probation/curfew checks and street checks are ideally preventing further criminal activity."
