Grant Fuhr: behind the mask

He was known as the best money goalie of his era.

Wayne Gretzky called him the "greatest goaltender in the history of the NHL."

The reference is to Grant Fuhr, who backstopped the Edmonton Oilers to four Stanley Cup championships and captured two Canada Cups.

Fuhr's life will come to the big screen early next year with "Making Coco: The Grant Fuhr Story."

The documentary is the latest from Kelowna producer Adam Scorgie, and will be directed by Don Metz.

The documentary will provide a never-before-seen look into the Oilers dynasty through the 1980s and a look behind the mask of one of the most enigmatic goalies in the NHL.

Fuhr set records for most consecutive games (76) and games played in a season (79), but also retired at age 26 in an attempt to renegotiate a long-term contract. He was also suspended for an entire season for substance use.

The documentary will debut on Rogers Sportsnet early in 2018.

The Grant Fuhr story comes out ahead of another Scorgie produced documentary "Inmate #1," the highly-anticipated Danny Trejo biopic.
