Jacob's need for speed

Jacob Astren has his sights set on a professional racing career.

The B.C.-born racer began racing karts at the age of 13 in Chilliwack.

''As soon as Astren got behind the wheel of a championship-calibre F1600 race car, his raw talent came to the forefront. His first test was so impressive, it was enough to catch the attention of reigning Canadian championship F1600 team Exclusive Autosport and team owner Michael Duncalf," his mother Kim says.

The 17-year-old has competed in International karting events across North America.

The rookie was offered a spot with the multi-time champions for the 2017 Formula Tour F1600 Championship.

He finished off the season winning rookie of the year, placing third overall.

Astren got his first professional first-place victory in the final race.

"(It's an) amazing way to end the season. We are now looking for sponsorship so he can continue to compete and reach his goal of becoming champion," his mom said.
