Shannon bridge reopens

Traffic will again move, uninterrupted, along Shannon Lake Road this morning.

As of 8 a.m., the Shannon Lake Road bridge, which crosses McDougall Creek at the east end of the road, will reopen to traffic.

The portion of road has been closed since early July while the city replaced the bridge which was not only at the end of its life cycle, but also suffered damage during spring floods.

The replacement, at a cost of $1.55 million, is the largest infrastructure project tackled by the city in 2017.

The project included:

  • Diversion and habitat protection of McDougall Creek
  • Road realignment
  • Sidewalk installation
  • Complete bridge replacement
  • Environmental monitoring
  • Safety and materials testing and inspection
  • Habitat restoration

The new bridge has also been built to accommodate heavier traffic loads, such as fire trucks. It is expected to have a life span of about 70 years.
