'Affordable housing crisis'

A social service agency in Vernon is hoping to find other options to deal with homelessness and the lack of housing for residents struggling to find affordable housing.

Annette Sharkey, executive director of the Social Planning Council, is seeking a $50,000 grant to review and update attainable housing and homelessness strategies.

“We're still in an affordable-housing crisis,” Sharkey told city council on Tuesday. “It's the biggest issue right now.”

If the grant comes through, Sharkey said a consultant would be hired.

“We're looking for what we can do immediately and then in the medium and longer term. I'm really proud of the work on these strategies...but we're in a changing landscape.”

City council has agreed to issue a letter of support for the grant application.
