Jail guards ready to strike

Jail guards working at the Kelowna RCMP detachment have voted in favour of a strike, saying they make less than guards in nearby and similar-sized communities.

Seventeen CUPE Local 338 members voted 100 per cent in favour of strike action after negotiations broke down with the Commissionaries and City of Kelowna on Wednesday.

Jail guards in similar communities earn about $5 more an hour than those in Kelowna, said union local president Lee Mossman.

Members previously voted in favour of strike action in May, but chose to focus on resolving negotiations through mediation.

“We believe we are very close to reaching an agreement,” said Mossman. “We believe that if we can resolve this issue we will be able to conclude negotiations."

The next step is a meeting with the Labour Relations Board. Following that, 72-hour notice would have to be served for the union to take strike action.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees represents 1,000 members in the Kelowna area.
