Homes 'affordability key'

A group that spearheaded the issue of tiny homes in Vernon last year is welcoming news the province is looking at the possibility of using portable housing for communities suffering a housing crisis.

“Definitely the vacancy rate in Vernon has been almost impossible to meet,” said Patricia Wilson, executive director of Vernon's First Nations Friendship Centre.

The friendship centre runs its own low-cost apartment building for young adults and there is “a long, long waiting list,” according to Wilson. “I do understand the need.”

Members of Vernon council met in Vancouver yesterday with Housing Minister Selina Robinson where portable housing was one option discussed in B.C.'s ongoing housing crisis.

In 2016, the friendship centre promoted the idea of tiny homes in the community; first by holding a contest and second by starting to build one as a pilot project.

“Affordability has been at the forefront of the project,” said Wilson.

While the project has been on hold due to funding constraints and the lack of donated labour and supplies, the matter is back on the FNFC Society's agenda next month with a look at fundraising.
