Syilx mural up downtown

Indigenous artists put the finishing touches on a new downtown mural Monday.

The mural was painted on the side of the Mike’s Pawn Shop building as a part of the inaugural Penticton Art’s Rising Festival that took place over the weekend.

Designing artist Michelle Jack says the mother figure in the middle of the sky represents mother universe, “the whole design is to have healing energy for all things.”

Jack said this is the first Syilx mural in Penticton since the late 60s.

“It’s meant to be really graphic image, instead of being overly realistic, so that it reads almost like a giant silk-screen.”

Jack was assisted by Joseph Sanchez, a renowned member of the Native Group of Seven.
