The provincial government has cancelled some restrictions on campfires within the Kamloops Fire Centre.
Category 2 and Category 3 open burning prohibitions were rescinded at elevations higher than 1,200 metres in the Vernon Fire Zone and in the northern portion of the Kamloops Fire Zone.
However, Category 2 and Category 3 open fires are still prohibited in the following areas:
- Vernon Fire Zone (below 1,200 metres)
- Kamloops Fire Zone, North Prohibition Area (below 1,200 metres)
- Kamloops Fire Zone, South Prohibition Area (all elevations)
- Merritt Fire Zone (all elevations)
- Lillooet Fire Zone (all elevations)
- Penticton Fire Zone (all elevations)
Anyone conducting a Category 3 open burn in ares where it is permitted, must first obtain a permit to do so.
People found in contravention of an open burning prohibition may be issued a ticket for $1,150, required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, fined up to $100,000 and/or sentenced to one year in jail.
If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
