Spawning event success

Families were invited to watch Kokanee salmon spawning in Mission Creek for the ‘kikinee Salmon Festival’ on Sunday.

Children learned about the fish, how humans fit in the natural world, the story of how food was given and an underwater live camera of the fish.

“It’s an annual celebration we have every August to celebrate the arrival of the Kokanee salmon,” said Regional District of Central Okanagan park interpreter Nicole Kittmer.

Kittmer said there were multiple activities for people to participate in and also First Nation information and interpretive biology about the salmon.

This year, not as many fish passed through Mission Creek but the ones that did were impressive.

“The fish were larger so they are getting more food… the ones that are surviving, so they are a bit bigger and more impressive this year,” she said. “It is a miracle that they are here if you think of how many thousands of eggs are laid.”
