Townhouse fire

UPDATE 4:01 p.m.

A mother and her daughter managed to escape a fire in their townhouse unharmed Friday.

Crews were called to the fire in one of the units at the Blue Sky Housing Co-op at around 12:30 p.m.

Vernon Fire Rescue Cpt. Rob Cucheran said where crews arrived there were smoke and flames coming from the unit.

“There is significant fire damage to that unit,” said Cucheran. “It will be some time before they can move back into it.”

However, crews managed to keep the flames from damaging the neighbouring townhouse.

“The guys did an excellent job,” said Cucheran, adding crews managed to pressurize the next door townhouse so there was very little smoke damage and no fire damage.

Cucheran said one firefighter was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital with minor injuries, but could not say how the firefighter was hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is not considered suspicious.
