School goes water-only

A Vancouver Island elementary school is going water-only in an effort to cut sugar from students' diets.

Alexander Elementary School in Duncan has implemented a new policy asking students and staff to leave their juice, pop and other drinks at home.

“Water will be served with lunch, at recess and snacks, and kids are encouraged to bring water only to school as well,” Parent Advisory Council co-chair Sarah Byrne told CTV.

The school already provides breakfast, lunch and snacks for children whose families can't afford it. But, the new policy takes student health a step further.

“Our goal is to just drink more water, reduce the amount of sugar intake in a day,” said principal Dani Morrow.

Students have been given free reusable water bottles, and the recommendation is voluntary.
