'Bubbles' for SOWINS

An e-commerce website is coming to Penticton to support those trying to exit the sex trade.

JCI Penticton is hosting an event, Sept. 9, 4 to 7 p.m., in support of the South Okanagan and Women in Needs Society's SAFE XST (exit) program. The event — at Blasted Church Vineyards — will also coincide with the launch of a unique new fundraising platform.

Instead of the typical silent auction fundraiser or single event, JCI has built a website where people can purchase comfort items directly for the program all year.

"What we want to do is create an opportunity to provide those luxury or comfort items that I take for granted everyday, that make me feel good or safe or warm," said Margie Hubbard with JCI Penticton. "It is intended for people who just want to help give something nice to someone who doesn’t have that capability right now."

While SAFE XST has five years of funding from the federal government, it does not have the funding to provide anything that isn't essential, such as robes, lotion or fuzzy slippers.

The website and event is one of JCI’s many “impact projects” in the community.

"It takes strength, courage and confidence in order to be able exit that lifestyle or to get your feet under you," Hubbard said. "You have the strength to continue and make a positive change in your life."

The event, sponsored by Total Restoration Services, is a bubble bath themed afternoon including bubbly alcoholic beverages and appetizers.

Attendees are encouraged to come dressed in bathrobes and flip flops. The cost of the event is $50 with the money going to help the sustain the website.

The e-commerce page will open Sept. 9, but tickets to the launch party can be found here
