Wine: Switchback Pinot Gris, 2015
Winery: Haywire (Okanagan Crush Pad), Summerland
Why drink it? The first item to note about this wine: the farmers who grew the grapes are acknowledged on the tech sheet (where all the wine geek stuff is listed), for wine begins in the vineyard. An organic pinot gris from a site surrounded by sage and ponderosa pines, if you are looking for a wine that brings you back to a warm summer Okanagan breeze, here it is. Light and sophisticated floral notes on the nose, then a dance of minerality, tropical fruits, white peach, and a creaminess (google malolactic fermentation) that will be a surprise for most pinot gris drinkers. This bottle kicks the varietal up a notch.
Price: $25
Pair with: The minerality lends itself to seafood – oysters, mussels – while the creaminess lends itself to anything with butter. Therefore, a light seafood pasta with an elegant cream sauce, perhaps a delicately flavoured basil alfredo. Also pairs surprisingly well with avocado toast.
Classic cancon music pairing: Wild Wild, Haywire
