Ex-Rocket strikes it rich

Leon Draisaitl has hit NHL paydirt.

The former Kelowna Rocket forward inked an eight-year contract extension today with the NHL's Edmonton Oilers. The deal carries with it an average annual salary of US$8.5 million.

It comes on the heels of an eight-year, US$100 million deal signed by teammate Connor McDavid earlier in the off season.

Draisaitl spent a portion of one season with the Rockets. In 32 games at the end of the 2014-15 season, he amassed 19 goals and 34 assists.

He put up another 10 goals and 18 assists in 19 post-season games, helping the Rockets to the Memorial Cup.

Last season, his second full season in the NHL, he finished with 29 goals and 77 points and added another 16 points in 13 playoff games.

The contract comes into effect this season, and runs through the 2024-25 season.
