Okanagan scores 18 medals

It was a very successful 14 days for Okanagan athletes at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Athletes from the valley are coming home with 18 medals, including five gold, eight silver and five bronze.

Penticton swimmer Acacia Benn and the men's volleyball team won the final medals Saturday.

Benn picked up the final medal Saturday, a silver in the women's 5,000 metre.

Benn finished the distance in one hour, one minute 31.37 seconds. She finished two minutes behind the gold medalist.

It was Benn's fifth medal of the games, to go with two gold and two silver.

The men's volleyball team, including several north and central Okanagan athletes, captured bronze in a five set thriller against Quebec.

Benn's teammate Tyler Wall is bringing home a trophy case full of medals. He won eight in the pool, two gold, three silver and three bronze.

During the opening week, Jerome Blake won a pair of gold and a silver in men's athletics while Quinci Birker brought home a bronze in women's beach volleyball.
