Fire fully contained

UPDATE: 1:40 p.m.

The wildfire burning south of Peachland is now fully contained, and fire crews don't expect it to grow any larger.

Rachel Witt, fire information officer, says the fire is being held at four hectares, and 21 BC Wildfire Service firefighters are currently on scene.

There is no longer air support fighting the fire.

Despite the containment, Witt says crews will remain at the fire through Saturday night.

ORIGINAL: 9 a.m.

BC Wildfire Service firefighters worked through the night on the three-hectare fire in the hills just south of Peachland.

The fire was reported at 3:30 p.m. Friday as a 100 square metre blaze, but it quickly grew to about three hectares, as winds blew through the area.

The blaze burned “really close” to the Peachland water treatment facility in a heavily-forested and steep area, according to Peachland assistant fire chief James Springer. Several homes are also near the fire.

Rachel Witt, fire information officer, says eight BC Wildfire Service firefighters remained at the fire overnight.

Crews are heading to the fire this morning to relieve the firefighters who worked through the night, but Witt did not know how many would be working on the fire through the day.

Dennis Craig, Peachland fire chief, says his crew of 18 firefighters left the fire at about 10 p.m. Friday night.

"As far as Peachland and other structural agencies, unless things take a turn for the worse, we're not involved with that fire anymore," Craig said. "Our structural guys stayed on until we felt comfortable leaving."

Witt said she did not know if the fire was considered contained this morning, but Springer said Friday afternoon that the fire had been 65 per cent blanketed by retardant.

As of 8 p.m. Friday, air tankers had left the fire, leaving two helicopters to bucket it from the air.

Witt said she would have more information about the current state of the fire later this morning.

The fire did not force the evacuation of any homes in the area.
