Smith to swim for medal

Kelowna's Kierra Smith has qualified for the final in the women's 200 metre breaststroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

Smith qualified with the fifth fastest time in Thursday's semi-final.

Swimming in the slower of the two semi-final heats, Smith touched the wall in a time of two minutes, 23.18 seconds. That was more than a second-and-a-half quicker than her morning qualifying time.

Smith finished second in her heat, just one-one hundredth of a second behind the Chinese swimmer. The tip three semi-final times came out of the other semi-final heat.

The final goes Friday morning local time.

This will be Smith's second final at the world championships.

She finished sixth in Tuesday;s 100 metre breaststroke final.

Kelowna's Kierra Smith led a two-woman Canadian contingent into the semi-finals of the women's 200 metre breaststroke at the FINA World Swimming Championships Thursday.

Smith and teammate Ashley McGregor both qualified for the semi's out of their respective heats earlier today.

Swimming in the third of four qualifying heats, Smith completed the distance in 2 minutes, 24.57 seconds. That was good enough for third in her heat, and sixth best overall.

McGregor finished with the ninth best time.

Smith will try to qualify for her second final of the world championships taking place in Budapest, Hungary.

Earlier this week, she finished sixth in the 100 metre breaststroke final.

The semi-final race is set for later this morning local time.
