Sheriff stands trial next year

A former Kamloops sheriff who faces sex charges after he was caught up in a Creep Hunters' sting will face trial in February.

Last summer, Kevin Johnston allegedly communicated through text messages with a member of the vigilante group posing as a 14-year-old girl.

Creep Hunters said many of the messages were sexual in nature and included naked photos and a picture of a man in a sheriff's uniform.

Johnston faces charges of luring a child, making sexually explicit material available to a child, and arranging a sexual offence against a child.

He was previously charged with invitation to sexual touching of a person under 16, but this charge was stayed on June 5.

In a video posted to Facebook on Aug. 27, 2016, which has been viewed over 105,000 times, one of the Creep Hunters confronts a man on the phone whom she addresses as Kevin.

“I honestly thought you were older, even though you did say you were 14,” Kevin says in the video. “You did say you were 14, I will full-on say that I read that in the texts, that you said you were 14, but honestly I didn't believe that you were that age, just by the texts.”

Johnston's trial is scheduled to begin on Feb. 8, 2018.
