Free concert with Pikes

Relive your youth at a free, outdoor concert this weekend in Kelowna.

If the music of the late 1980s and early '90s gets your motor running, check out The Northern Pikes on Sunday at Jim Stuart Park. They'll be joined by Kelowna native Kevin Kane of the band The Grapes of Wrath.

It's part of a summer-long series of activities produced by Festivals Kelowna in celebration of Canada’s sesquicentennial year.

“I think many folks in Kelowna will be reliving their youth with The Northern Pikes and singing along to the hits, myself included," said Renata Mills, executive director of Festivals Kelowna.

The Pikes' hits include Teenland, She Ain’t Pretty, and Things I do For Money. At their height, the Saskatchewan rockers opened for acts including David Bowie and Duran Duran.

The concert goes from 5 to 9 p.m., starting off with Francophone artists Mélisande, performing a blend of pop with traditional Quebec folk, followed by rising Alberta country star Tim Hus.

“We encourage people to make a night of it,” explains Mills. “With an early start time, pack a picnic dinner or buy some treats from the food vendors on site, take part in the games and activities by Park n’ Play and the Valley First Event Team, and settle in for a great summer evening.”
