Cigarette starts hedge fire

Despite wildfires raging across the province forcing upwards of 40,000 people from their homes, it looks like some have not received the message about the tinder-dry conditions out there.

The Osoyoos Fire Department was called to the newly launched Tumbleweed Distillery shortly before noon Monday for a hedge on fire.

Fire Chief Rick Jones said distillery staff managed to extinguish the fire with a hose and fire extinguisher by the time the fire department arrived, but crews stayed on scene to mop up the small fire.

He said it appears someone flicked a lit cigarette into one of the bushes in front of the business.
