A three-year-old child is in hospital after falling from a window in Surrey on Sunday.

The girl fell to a patio below after leaning against a screen in the second-storey window at a home on the 13900 block of 64A Avenue, in the Newton area.  

Surrey firefighters treated the child, who was taken to hospital by paramedics and admitted overnight for observation.  

The Ministry of Children and Family Services was advised and will be following up with the family.

Family members were apparently not close enough to grab the child before she fell, Surrey RCMP report.  

Police say the incident could have ended much worse and remind parents to make sure windows are secure.
