Mayhem on Rio Drive

UPDATED: 6:00 p.m.

Despite several live power lines being dragged to the ground on Rio Drive Thursday afternoon, no one was injured in the incident.

Cpt. Dave Leimert of the Kelowna Fire Department said a flat deck truck with a crane on the back had driven down the road with its crane extended, according to “unconfirmed reports,” catching several lines and snapping a power pole.

Leimert said the truck looks to have driven about 60 to 80 metres down the block before realizing the wires were snagged.

Ryan Tschritter, a resident in the block, was out doing yard work when he heard a loud noise, and saw the truck with the crane in the extended position driving down the road, pulling down wires.

Brian, who was driving behind the flat deck truck when the incident occurred, said the truck's crane was about three feet above the wires when it hit them.

“Instead of being in the down position, it was sitting way up, it was probably as high as the peak of our house,” Brian said.

UPDATED: 4:30 p.m.

FortisBC says 285 customers are without power and are expected not to have it back until 9 p.m. Thursday.

A witness from the scene said a utility truck was driving on Rio Drive, near Terrace Drive, when its bucket came in contact with a wire and broke one power pole and pulled wires from several houses.

There are lines scattered all over the sidewalk and FortisBC is on scene.

Rio Drive is down to one lane-alternating traffic.

ORIGINAL: 4 p.m.

Crews are responding to multiple power lines being taken down and describe the scene as a huge mess.

A witness from the scene said there was a vehicle collision at Magic Estates around 3:30 p.m., causing the outage.

At least five power lines have been taken out, and residents living in the area of Clifton Road and Rio Drive have lost power.

It is not clear how many homes have been impacted by the downed lines.

Castanet has sent a reporter to the scene and will update the story as more details become available.
