A black bear caused a stir at a Burnaby elementary school on Monday.

Cascade Heights Elementary was put on alert about 3 p.m. as parents were picking up their children when the bear was seen on the grounds. 

Conservation officers said the bear was tranquilized after it climbed a tree.

Students and staff were told to shelter in place while the animal was tracked and removed.
