Ripped off by Fortis

I too am overwhelmed with the cost of an all electric home, furnace, hot water and of course lights etc.

I am a tenant living in a 830 sq foot 2 bedroom suite. A 1970‘s home, so 2 x 4 walls, decent wood windows and well insulated ceiling. My bill for Dec 20th to Feb 20th was $676.06. The two tiered billing system is extremely unfair to those of us who rely on electricity alone.

I am very conscious of consumption, unplug all appliances when not in use, never a light on if not needed, I run the shower at 1/2 pressure, laundry done once a week, the heating vent in the main bedroom is usually closed, the laundry room is not heated, so really am only heating 600 sq feet, motion lights outside, oven is virtually not used, turn the computer off if not being used and turn the heat down to 14 when I am at work and sleeping.

To verify my conservation savings I was able to obtain the electricity records back to 2001 (I have lived here since 2015). A previous tenant in 2001 used 33,664 kWh for the year, another in 2009 used 22,303 kWh. In 2015 I used 16,047 kWh and in 2016 use was 11,073 kWh so my consumption is far less than previous tenants.

In the following dollar comparisons I have used the total cost of the hydro bill, customer charge, electricity charge, GST, interim rate increases, everything for a one year period, as that is what comes out of my and your pocket.

In 2001 a kWh cost .059. So the 33,664 kWh cost $2,011.00 - today it would cost $5,049.00
In 2009 a kWh cost .085. So the 22,303 kWh cost $1,909.00 - today it would cost $3,345.00
In 2016 a kWh cost .141. So the 11,073 kWh cost $1,562.00 - today it would cost $1,660.00

In 2017, a kWh cost .150. This is only the first bill received for 2017. I consumed 4,502 kWh and the bill was $676.00 divide that and you get .150/kWh.

If it was the flat rate in the first tier at .098  for 4,502 kWh my bill would only be $441.00, a $235.00 dollar difference.

So are those of us that rely on electricity to stay warm getting entirely ripped off by Fortis with their new two tiered energy conservation rate, it would certainly  appear so.
