Cage films in Osoyoos

UPDATE: 12:30 p.m.

The sighting of actor Nicolas Cage at a Buy-Low store in Osoyoos was no coincidence.

Cage is in the South Okanagan for filming of the movie The Humanity Bureau.

According to a story in the Hollywood Reporter, the movie will begin filming this week.

Set in 2030 after global warming has destroyed the American Midwest, the movie follows the agency known as the Humanity Bureau, which sends people deemed unproductive to an area known as New Eden.

Cage plays a caseworker appealing the banishment of a single mother and her son.

The movie also stars Sarah Lind, Jakob Davies and Vicellous Shannon.

Minds Eye Entertainment, VMI Worldwide and Bridgegate Pictures are partnering for the movie. It's the second in a six-movie partnership between the three companies.

The first, The Recall, starring Wesley Snipes, was shot in the North Okanagan.

All six movies are expected to be shot in the Okanagan.

Okanagan Film Commissioner Jon Summerland says the Humanity Bureau will be shot entirely in the South Okanagan over a span of between 17 and 20 days.

"It's all actor and locations. There are no big setups or stunts or effects," says Summerland.

"It's talent driven. It's about how good it looks, where they are, the location."

Summerland says he is excited about this movie because it will show off the versatility of the Okanagan as a filming location.

"It's not always about a beautiful location. This location is a nuclear winter. It's not even beautiful. It's supposed to be the exact opposite. We can do beautiful and we can do desolate.

"So, to know you can shoot something that isn't beautiful and still stay in a beautiful place is massive."
