KELOWNA, BC: A group of local business owners have come together to offer a unique incentive for consumers to shop local on December 6th and 7th this week. For two days only, anyone who makes a minimum purchase at any of the participating businesses will be entered to win a $250 gift card from The Local Gift Card. The incentive intentionally coincides with BC Buy Local Week which is being hosted around the province to celebrate and bring awareness to the economic, social and environmental benefits that result from supporting local businesses in BC. In Kelowna, the week of December 1 to 7 2019 has been proclaimed as BC Buy Local Week by Mayor Colin Basran.

There are over twelve businesses who have currently signed up to be part of this incentive. One of those businesses is Burke Hair Lounge that is located at 515 Lawrence Ave. Lisa Burke, the owner of Burke Hair Lounge, has been a long-time advocate for supporting local businesses. When asked why she believes supporting independent locally owned businesses is important here is what she had to say “When buying from a small business, you’re buying more than just a product or service. You are buying hundreds of hours of failures and experimentation intermixed with moments of pure joy. Most importantly, you are supporting the dream and passion of the small business owner.”

The participating businesses are not just brick and mortar businesses either. There are home-based businesses like NancyBloklandPottery and Mexican Treasures that will be at two different holiday markets this weekend. The incentive hopes to bring awareness to the wide variety of businesses that are right here in our community and the benefits they provide. Benefits such as creating jobs, giving back to local charities and strengthening our local economy.
