Ponderosa Music & Arts Festival
Apr 29, 2014
The Ponderosa Arts & Music Festival was created by Kris Hargrave and Kia Zahrabi, two friends from the Okanagan region of BC who had a vision for creating a new type of festival experience. The two went on to form a group by the name of 367 Productions, a production company dedicated to enhancing people’s lives by creating incredible experiences.
Below you will find additional information on Ponderosa Festival to help you become more familiar with
the event, the vision of the creators and their overall philosophy on the festival experience.
The Site – the Ponderosa Festival site is absolutely stunning. The historic fairgrounds sit on the banks of the Kettle River in the small farming community of Rock Creek, BC; about five hours east of Vancouver and under two hours from Kelowna, BC. The grounds’ picturesque setting and riverside campgrounds are reason enough to visit the area.
The Arts – In addition to showcasing talented musicians, artists of all backgrounds will show off their skills in painting, visual arts and other creative media. At last year’s event, local artists participated in the Live Painting Project. Each artist painted a piece over the course of the weekend and auctioned it off at the festival to the highest bidder, with all proceeds from the Live Painting Project going directly to the artists.
Keeping It Local – One of the goals for this festival is to keep things local and, in the process, reduce the impact on this pristine site. This philosophy is applied to the selection of artists, musicians, vendors, local farmers, support staff, and sponsors. Kia and Kris are passionate about involving the community and helping support local businesses.
“Putting on an amazing event and helping out the local community in the process makes the entire experience even more rewarding.â€
-Ââ€Kia Zahrabi
Tickets – Three-Ââ€day Weekend Passes will give attendees full access to live music, riverside camping, artist and food vendors, and free parking. And at $125 per person, it’s hard to pass up.
Kris and Kia, the festival creators and directors, work hard to keep Ponderosa reasonably priced so that guests from all over can have a chance to get in on the festival action.
A limited number of early-Ââ€bird tickets are also on sale for $99 per person.
Musical Direction – The vision is not to be a one-Ââ€genre festival. There are festivals doing this and doing it well, but Ponderosa aims to offer a wider selection to their audience. The organizers say they want to build a reputation for having world-Ââ€class bands and artists and also focus on showcasing up-Ââ€and-Ââ€coming talent that surprise attendees. Ponderosa Festival will be a place where people can come and discover their new favourite band.
No matter what your musical preference, as a festival-Ââ€goer you can expect chilled out afternoons in the sun followed by psychedelic rock and roll sunsets, and starlit, booty shaking, dance parties going on into the night.
Other Activities – Rock Creek is the gateway to the Kootenay-Ââ€Boundary region of BC, which is full of charming little towns. There are tons of activities in and around the Rock Creek area that will suit anyone’s agenda. Whether it’s tubing down the Kettle River, taking an afternoon carriage ride to the oldest pub in BC, touring the Okanagan wine country in nearby Oliver and Osoyoos, hiking in the surrounding hills, gold panning with local historians, or visiting nearby ghost towns, you’re bound to find something unique and exciting right around the corner. Without a doubt, the Boundary area will have people coming back for more.
