SENDAI, Japan - June 2019—For Kaz Morran, writing started as a way to fuse his love of science, technology, and exploration. Then he had a child. Now, his mission is to move his family from Japan to Kelowna and launch a new career with Tribulation: A Science Fiction Thriller, released June 1 on Amazon.

“Life can be quite comfortable here,” says Morran of Sendai, a city best known for the 2011 earthquake-tsunami-meltdown disaster, “but it’s not the best place to cultivate a young mind. I have an obligation to give my son the best opportunities I can, and that means moving back to BC.”

Morran, who grew up in Penticton, hopes to relocate with his 7-year old son and Japanese wife in time for the start of grade 3 and minor hockey, but he doesn’t think his experience teaching English in Japan would translate into meaningful employment here.

That’s where Tribulation comes in.

Available in digital and paperback, Tribulation centres on a mixed-race Canadian-Japanese aerospace engineer whose struggles against xenophobia and conformity lead him to pursue a career as an astronaut.

Morran cautions readers not to draw too many parallels to his own life, however. “The events in the book are far more terrifying.” He adds, “I’ve taught people who build spaceships but never built one myself. Maybe that’ll be the next career change. Also, I’ve never been accused of treason or been trapped underground on a simulated space mission while being stalked by— Well, I’ll leave that for the reader to discover.”
