Habitat for Humanity to Build 150 Homes

Jul 10, 2017

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY OKANAGAN ANNOUNCES CARTER WORK WEEK IN CONJUNCTION WITH AFFILIATES ACROSS CANADA TO CELEBRATE THIS HISTORIC YEAR!

“Habitat for Humanity has successfully removed the stigma of charity by substituting it with a sense of partnership.”
— Jimmy Carter

Habitat Okanagan is proud to join 50 other affiliates in every province and territory of Canada in building/dedicating 150 homes in one week, as part of the Canada 150 campaign. Habitat Okanagan, a participating affiliate in the Habitat Canada family, believes that all of us can do our part, big or small, to provide stability, strength and self-reliance through sustainable homeownership. Locally, they are building a triplex at 2404 35th Avenue in Vernon, for 3 Vernon families who have been offered a no-down payment, non-interest bearing mortgage at fair market value, in order to get on the property ladder. Partnership is at the heart of Habitat for Humanity and families who qualify for a Habitat home must complete 500 hours of their own sweat equity. For a full list of participating local Habitat for Humanity organizations, please visit habitat.ca/150ReasonsToBuild

The Carter Work Week, now in its 34th year, was founded by former President Jimmy Carter and former first lady Rosalynn Carter as part of their outstanding commitment to social justice and human rights during and post-presidency, most notably through the Carter Center in Atlanta. The Carters have seen firsthand the effects of poor living conditions, and understand that families need a strong foundation to grow. That often begins with a safe place to call home.

Habitat Okanagan Board Chair, Stacey Fenwick says, “we are grateful for President and Mrs. Carter's continued partnership with Habitat, and invite you to get involved in Carter Work Week right here in the Okanagan. A huge thank-you to Traine Construction, Refresh Financial, Bell Media and Heartwood Homes among many other valued corporate partners. None of this would be possible without our generous community partners for the biggest build in Habitat’s history.”

How can YOU contribute to Habitat for Humanity in our community?

VOLUNTEER – for our build in Vernon or at our ReStores in Kelowna or West Kelowna.

If you’d like to be a part of the build project in Vernon, scheduled to be completed in September, you do not need prior building experience to volunteer. There are opportunities for all skill levels and abilities. We also have a call out for lightly-used steel toe boots; please contact [email protected] to help provide much-needed equipment. Or join our growing team of dedicated volunteers at one of two ReStores in Kelowna and West Kelowna, where we are recycling gently-used goods and helping significantly reduce waste in the local landfill.

DONATE – All donations, big or small, help Habitat Okanagan fulfill its mission of strengthening families through affordable homeownership. Bell Media is launching a text-to-donate campaign the week of July 10 – 14 and details will also be available on their website.
