The tuxedo jacket

I’ve long preached the gospel of the perfect blazer, with its easy wearability and classic boy-ish look. For this holiday season, I suggest adding another menswear inspired number to your closet, with the same versatility and effortless feel as the blazer: the tuxedo jacket.

With a longer cut and satin shawl lapel, this “dinner” jacket is a striking addition to any outfit. I love the tuxedo jacket for its sophisticated yet versatile effect - it can be worn casually with skinny jeans and a t-shirt or added to a cocktail dress or long gown for a formal night out. If you’re extra bold, try emulating the Annie Hall look with matching trousers to rock a sexy full tuxedo look.

Since the holidays are approaching quickly, Christmas parties are just around the corner.  Use the tuxedo jacket as a perfectly festive part of your festive attire. Adding this jacket to a glittery top, a textured skirt, or a fitted dress adds both interest and warmth, whether the event involves rum and egg nog with friends, a holiday work party, or Christmas eve dinner with the family.

Tips and Tricks for Buying and Wearing the Tuxedo Jacket

  • Wear this jacket with casual clothing to elevate a laid back look. Try pairing it over a simple blouse and fitted trousers with a high bun and bright pink lips.
  • Add the jacket to formal dresses to add structure and polish. A white tuxedo jacket paired with a vibrant dress and neutral heels will make you stand out among a sea of little black dresses.
  • Most tuxedo jackets come in a neutral colors so your mixing and maxing options are endless.
  • Both longer relaxed options and fitted jackets are available. The relaxed jacket is perfect for a casual look where as a fitted tuxedo is great for topping a long gown.
  • The most important thing to look for is a good fit in the shoulders and sleeves. You want a “borrowed from the boys” vibe, but a fit that is just for you.
  • To balance out the masculine feel of the jacket, juxtapose this jacket with feminine details like a sparkly clutch, red lips, pretty lace, or a floral frock.
