Sequins for the day
by Alana Denham - Story: 67980

It’s that glittery time of year again!  I’m a huge fan of sequins, and December is chock full of events where sequins can be on full display.  Most people think this texture should be reserved for festive holiday evenings like your office party, but I think you can absolutely bring some of that sparkle and shine into the daytime too! Your office mates will be grinning ear to ear at your holiday shimmer and sparkle while sipping eggnog lattes.

It’s worth noting that sequins can be intimidating, especially in the bright light of day.  For those wanting just a hint of sheen in their outfits, adding sequined accessories will definitely do the trick.  I love a sequined heel or ballet flat added to work trousers or your weekend jeans.  It’s an easy and fool-proof way to wear this texture without looking like a disco ball.  For extra festive points, pair your glittery feet with some red or burgundy jeans.  You can also add a little more sparkle with a shiny skinny belt.

Now, if you’ve decided to go for it and bring out the sequins for the day, there are a few guidelines to follow.  First, stick to ONE statement piece. Adding sheen to sheen will only make your look dated and inexpensive. Second, you want to keep the sequined piece in the spotlight by pairing it with clothing that is neutral and simple while avoiding too many accessories.  Keep it simple with pearls, gold ball studs, or a simple cuff.  Third, your footwear should help anchor the outfit, with simple leather ankle boots, nude ballet flats, or lace up suede booties.

Make sure to include a lot of texture in your outfit.  Sequins are a very bold texture, when you add strong textures to it, the effect is softened and easier to digest.  Try to include thicker knits, wools or tweeds; these heavier fabrics provide the perfect counter to the sequined pant, tank, or skirt you are wearing.

And if all else fails, pair sequined tank with your favourite jeans and blazer. Fool proof festive attire.
