Summer trend: colour blocking

Kelowna isn’t called the California of Canada for nothing; our summer style is all about bright and bold pieces on the beach, at work or on the street. Bright colours have always been an easy way to add some fun into your outfit, and this year, we’re kicking it up a notch with Colour Blocking!

Colour blocking is a huge trend right now both on the runway (Gucci and Jil Sander are using it lots this year) and on the street. The idea is to take bold, solid coloured pieces from your closet and pair them up in new and unexpected ways.  All those rules you’ve heard about clashing colours? Forget them! When it comes to colour blocking, we’re all about experimenting.

Summer provides a great opportunity to try out this trend, as skirts, shorts, pants and tops in bold colours are available everywhere right now.  And, in fact, this trend can be very cost efficient, which we can all appreciate, right?

To try out this trend, follow these simple steps, and you’ll have yourself a chic and fun summer outfit!

  • to ease into this trend, chose one main piece to be the statement piece: a bright coloured pair of shorts or skirt is a good bet, paired with a basic tank or t-shirt in a neutral colour like beige, grey, brown, black or white.
  • next, choosing a bright coloured sandal or purse will add more colour and interest to your outfit without going to the extreme of this trend
  • try choosing different tones of the same colour (such as royal blue with baby blue) or colours near each other on the colour wheel (such as blue and purple).  Or for a completely different look, you can use colours not normally paired together (such as pink and orange).
  • your colour choices can be contrasting, but they should still complement each other.  Bring out the colour wheel, and see what looks good together; complementary colours will be found on opposite sides of the wheel. And if you’re going to wear two strong colours together, make sure they are they are equal in saturation.
