Violet was born in Michel, B.C., growing up on the family farm near Alice Siding along with three brothers and seven sisters. She started working at an early age and one of her first jobs was a housekeeper for the Spiers family.

After marrying William (Bill) Wocknitz and living in various communities in B.C., they returned to Creston upon Bill
