SAWKINS, Bernice Verina

SAWKINS: Bernice Verina .1918 - 2017. Bernice passed away very peacefully at Spring Valley Care Centre after several years of dementia. She is survived by her four children: Philip (Maureen), Sharon, Ken and Wayne (Renita). Seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren will also miss her. Bernice was predeceased by her husband, Bill, of 72 years. Born in Prince George, she lived east of there in Longworth until she married. Then after one trip to the coast where she saw flowers blooming in early spring, she decided that the family had to move. Bernice lived in Vancouver, South Burnaby, Youbou, Lake Cowichan, Mill Bay, Abbotsford and Kelowna. Bernice was a quilter and made a quilt for each family member. She helped found the Abbotsford Quilters Guild. She was also very active in the Abbotsford fall fair both with submitting items to be judged as well as helping with the judging. The family would like to thank the staff at the Spring Valley Care Centre for the excellent care that Bernice received. A special thanks also has to be given to Dr. Schriemer for his attention to her. A family gathering will be held later in the spring. Bernice was an extraordinary baker, canner, and jam, pickle and pie maker. She kept two full-sized freezers stuffed with prepared coffee cakes and desserts and frozen fruit waiting to be used. Holiday meals were often spent at Bill and Bernice's home with kids and grandkids helping with the cooking and then the clean-up after the meal, before everyone sat down to play cards. She read every Catherine Cookson book that she could get her hands on, in between her quilting and baking times. She was an extremely kind and selfless person and we will all miss her. Donna
