RAIKES, Walter Eden

RAIKES, Walter Eden

Walter Eden Raikes, 90, was born in New Westminster, BC on February 23, 1927 to Walter Harry and Minna Helen Raikes.

In the spring of 1952 he met the love of his life, Rosemary (née Dunlop), and in the fall of that same year they were wed. The two forged a successful and adventure filled life that started with humble beginnings. They owned and operated a large dairy-turned-fruit farm in the sunny
Okanagan Valley in the town of Kelowna. The work was long and hard, but rewarding and in the midst of it all they managed to raise five children.
In 1982, with most of their children grown, the two uprooted all that was familiar in Canada to enjoy the warm embrace of Maui’s shores. They purchased a small vacation rental management company in Kihei and over the next 36 years grew Condominium Rentals Hawaii into a thriving business. Eden remained active in the company well into his 80s, but was also able to enjoy the fruits of his labor with Rosemary as they traversed the globe on countless cruises, criss crossed the United States in their RV and of course indulged in many side trips to Las Vegas. His farming roots came full circle as Eden spent his final years tending to their small fruit farm in Kula. And all the while enjoying time spent with his ever growing family.

Eden was loved and admired by many. All who knew him could appreciate how his wisdom, determination, honesty, integrity and incredibly strong work ethic led to his successful life full of love and happiness.

Eden will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Rosemary, and his children: Brian Raikes, Tanis (Bill) Petrie, Allan (Gail) Raikes, Harry Raikes and Teresa (Marc) Emde, and his 11 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Friday, February 16th at 2pm at Keawala’i Congregational Church in Makena. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Eden’s name to the USO, an organization he strongly supported over the years.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to all of you. We enjoyed staying in your condominium when we went to Hawaii; especially Julie who in her younger teens didn't want to come home with us and Rosemary suggested she hide under her desk! He did live a wonderful life, despite all the hard work and now may he rest in peace. Be comforted by all the good memories.
Sincerely, Dorothy Thomson and her family, Cindy, Bruce, Wayne and Julie
