PENNER, Katy

PENNER, Katy

PENNER, Katy - Born March 15, 1924, went to be with her Lord on March 5, 2008.

She will be lovingly remembered by brothers: Cornelius, Swift Current, Peter (Irene) Kelowna, Henry (Helen) Swift Current, David (Anne) Swift Current, Walter (Velma) Lethbridge; sister Anne Tymos (Russell) Winnipeg; sister-in-law Jo Penner and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her parents Cornelius and Helena Penner; brother John; sisters Sarah Wiens and Helen Penner; sisters-in-law Susie Penner and Margaret Penner.

Katy was born in Schoendorf, Russia and grew up on a farm in the Swift Current, SK area. Her early sense of call to Africa led her to Bible College and Nursing School. She went to the Congo with the Mennonite Brethren Missions/Services starting a medical work in Kajiji. She spent 28 years in Africa. Here she started and directed a nursing school and was always involved in Christian education. Katy was not afraid to take on the challenge of directing an 1800 bed government hospital in Kinshasa.

Her work in Africa was interrupted when she came back to Canada to care for ailing family members. During that time she completed her nursing degree and taught at the University of Saskatchewan. Katy loved writing and has had two books published. One is a family history and the other depicted her years in the Congo.

Wherever Katy lived, the church was a central part of her life. She was the leader of many small group fellowships and Bible studies. She enjoyed mentoring International students when she lived in Saskatoon. She moved to Kelowna in 1996.
