Florence Marie McIntosh
February 12, 1915- November 29, 2011
With sadness we announce the passing of Marie, who resided in Kelowna BC for more than a half a century. Marie died suddenly of a stroke at the age of 96 years old. She was born and raised in Grande Prairie, Alberta. After earning a teaching degree, Marie taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Grande Prairie, as well as being a concertmaster for the Grande Prairie orchestra. Marie was one of two children born to the late Charles and Florence Poppin, and was the beloved wife of Ian Watson McIntosh. Her sister, Ramona, her husband, and her three loving children, Robert, Douglas and Louise, predeceased her. Marie will be greatly missed by her daughter in law Mary Ellen (Emmy) McKnight, and her spouse Blake, her grandson Kiyo Oye, his partner Sarah Cleveland, their son Avery, her nephews and nieces Jeannie, Bruce, Steve and Julie Harrison and Suzanne Fox, her wonderful caregiver Anita Leysa, and countless loving friends who were blessed to know her. Marie loved listening to classical music, playing the violin, listening to CBC radio and being involved in her community. She was an honorary member of directors for the Kelowna Community Music School and played first violin with the orchestra for many years, donating generously to both along the way. Marie was an agent for young talented musicians, strong activist and philanthropist, and enjoyed her involvement in the Unitarian Church. Marie also founded the North End Residence Association. She was passionate about the environment, gardening and discussing current events. Marie touched many people with her sharp wit, feisty personality, and intelligent mind.
Friends and family are invited to attend a celebration of her inspirational life on Friday, December 9th at The Unitarian Fellowship, which is located at 1310 Bertram Street in Kelowna, B.C. The music will start at 1:30pm, and the service will begin at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the BC Southern Interior Region of the Canadian Cancer Agency.
