MASON, Tom

Thomas Michael (Tom) MASON, 98, died peacefully in his Vernon home on February 25, 2018. A veteran of World War II and the Korean War, he retired as Chief Warrant Officer in 1977. Tom was born December 20, 1919 in Wayne, Alberta to Joseph Mikulosik and Anna Gabara. He worked in the coal mines in Wayne near Drumheller before enlisting in 1939.

As a member of the Calgary Highlanders, Tom arrived in England in September of 1940 eventually serving with the 8th Canadian Reconnaissance commonly called the 8th Recce. The 8th Recce landed in Normandy after the beach was secured and participated in the liberation of Caen and surrounding areas including the village of Louvigny. Here Tom met Mr Hollier-Larousse (of French Dictionary fame) and his teenage son, Thierry both members of the French Resistance. In later years, Thierry and his wife were guests of Tom and Gladys in Vernon and the Masons were hosted by them during several visits to France.

In 1949 Tom enlisted in Canada
