HUNTER, Glen Carman

HUNTER, Glen Carman

April 26, 1938 – March 29, 2020

Rest in Peace

After a lengthy and a hard-fought battle with cancer, dad passed away peacefully at Kelowna Hospice House on Sunday, March 29, 2020. Dad entered Hospice House on March 22nd and it was a difficult time amid COVID-19. Thankfully, for his final hours he was surrounded by the love and support from his dedicated wife, Joyce, as well as his daughter Angie.

Glen leaves Joyce, his loving wife of 52 years; his son Shawn Hunter; his and daughters Nikki Hunter (Tim) and Angie Ludvigsen (Thor); and his four grandchildren, who he loved: Marisa Hunter (Erik), Christopher and Jenica Hunter and Justus Florczyk, who are all missing their POPPA. Also mourning the loss of Glen are his two loving sisters Donna Thibert (Pat) and Ruby Boyd (Doug), who he was able to visit in Ontario last May 2019; as well as his sisters-in-law Rose Marie Landrigan (Fred), Carol Frame (Terry), Maureen O’Brien (Mike) and Brenda MacIssac (Tony); his brothers-in-law Kevin Power (Judy) and Lorne Power (Carol); and his numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews all across Canada. He was predeceased by his parents Ken and Della Hunter; brothers Dale Hunter and Bert Hunter (Nelda); sister Doris Coons (Mervin); parents-in-law Mary and Emmett Power; and brother-in-law David Power.

Dad was born and raised in South Mountain, Ontario and migrated west to BC after completing grade 13. He met Mom on Christmas Eve in 1966 in Williams Lake and they married in April of 1968. He worked hard in the Construction industry all throughout BC and Alberta as a Surveyor and Superintendent for Geddes Construction. Retirement was difficult for dad due to his commitment to work but after three attempts, he hung up his work boots, hard hat and put away the Coleman cooler lunch kit in 2008.

Dad had unsurmountable love and dedication to his family, children and siblings. His love language was ensuring everyone was taken care of and well supported. He was faithful to his parents and siblings through phone calls and visits even though they lived far away.

Dad’s drive, tenacity and persona can be summed up to include brutal honesty, hard work ethic, politics, financial matters, daily news, our national sports teams and a good glass of wine. He loved his music, especially John Lennon, Willy Nelson, Neil Diamond, Journey and Elton John. His honesty could sometimes be abrasive, and one never left a conversation with him wondering how he felt about things. He could ask personal questions without batting an eye or an ounce of shame, he was candid, radically honest and sometimes opinionated. But most of all, he loved his family. He was raised with the belief that things needed to be done efficiently and expediently and we have all learned that when a request would come in, the timeline to complete it was yesterday.

When the cancer returned in April of 2017, he lamented that he would never be able to hike up Knox Mountain, but he changed his walks to be in his own neighborhood closer to home which showed his determination to continue and prove some wrong.

Always one to recognize and wave at a neighbor and to offer a beer or a glass of wine to his guests, his greatest love were visitors at the home and family gatherings. Another love and great accomplishment for Dad was his world travel. He got the travel bug in 1994 and from there, he travelled the world. Most notably his favorite places were Australia, Egypt, Russia, Ireland and New Zealand. However, his heart was always most content when visiting his family in Ontario and his in-laws on the East Coast.

Dad fought tirelessly for the last month, even asking for his walker to be delivered to Hospice House two days before he went to the angels. His hard work ethic and determination were evident to the very end.

It’s all done dad, you did so well, thank you for everything…rest easy ~ you are loved.

The family gratefully acknowledges his family G.P. Doctor Jennifer Parsons and her staff at Guisachan Family Medical, Dr. Carter, the Cardiac Clinic at KGH, the numerous staff and Nurses on 4B at KGH and most importantly, Kelowna Hospice House (David, Orlean, Glenda, Sarah and Parmella to name a few). The Hospice staff were in a difficult position due to COVID-19 and showed compassion and care to us all even with the restrictions put in place.

Thank you to all our family, friends and relatives who have reached out to us these past few months and weeks, your kindness and compassion are so appreciated.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later when it is a more suitable time. In lieu of flowers, any donations made to the Central Okanagan Food Bank, cofoodbank.com, or the Central Okanagan Hospice Association, hospicehousekelowna.com, in Glen’s name are gratefully accepted. Joyce and Family, We are so very sorry for your loss. Although we did not know Glen personally, we did know him through Joyce.
