CALLAS, Ed (Charles Edgar)

In Loving memory of Ed (Charles Edgar CALLAS) who was born February 24, 1924 in Wainwright, Alberta.
In 1943, he volunteered for the RCAF. Ed earned the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM) for bravery as a mid-upper Gunner on a Lancaster bomber while stationed in England.

Upon returning to Canada, he married Wynne and they signed up for Watchmaking School together at Ryerson Tech. in Toronto, later opening their own jewellery store in Alberta. In 1958, they moved to Yellowknife, NWT where Ed began working with Indian Affairs for the Federal Government, becoming the Regional Superintendent in Inuvik (1966-67). In 1967, Ed set up the Audit Bureau for the brand new Territorial Government, and led that department until he retired to Vernon, BC in 1983.

During his life in the north, Ed survived plane crashes, boats sinking in icy waters, and bombardiers crashing through thin ice (three times in one winter!)

He built his own homes, cabins, and both wooden and fiberglass boats Ed was athletic; played badminton and curled in the Senior Nationals, and learned to swim in his seventies. He was an avid outdoorsman who could land a 30 pound trout, or bring down a moose with a single shot!
Ed had a sharp mind and enjoyed playing crib and bridge, and sharing his some laughs.

He was a man of integrity who always demonstrated perseverance and generosity.
